MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. – A long-time animal ambassador at a Sanibel wildlife clinic is now back in the wild.
The Clinic for the Rehabilitation of Wildlife in Sanibel says “Shelldon" the gopher tortoise was recently deemed fit to survive on his own and returned to the wild on August 27.
Officials released him at the Perico Preserve in Manatee County.
They say Shelldon was an ambassador at CROW for three years after he was hit by a car.
