NAPLES, Fla. -- A Naples Police Department crime scene unit was on the scene of human remains found just off U.S. 41 near downtown Naples Monday.
According to Naples Police, they were contacted by some fishermen Monday morning who said they found skeletal remains in the mangroves along the Gordon River, just to the north of the U.S. 41 bridge.
Investigators arrived and determined the remains to be human, but are unsure whether the person was male or female. They are working to find out if foul play was involved.
"They will try to put back all of the pieces of the puzzle, to determine if any of the bones look like they may have been damaged forcefully," said Lt. Seth Finman of the Naples Police Department. "The remains have been for some time."
In addition to the Naples Police crime scene unit, the Collier County medical examiner's office and a forensic team from Florida Gulf Coast University also responded to process the scene.
