The goal of Mothers Against Drunk Driving in Southwest Florida is to make sure there are no more victims of impaired driving. But to do that, they need your help. Their biggest fundraiser of the year is this coming weekend: their 5th annual "Walk Like MADD" 5K & 10K, but because of COVID-19, this year, the event is going virtual.
"You can walk or run in the community where you live, where you work, and where you play. So if you have a favorite park you want to walk in, that would be great. If you want to walk around your neighborhood or run around your neighborhood. Whatever feels comfortable for you," Lori Burke, the Executive Director of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in Southwest Florida, said.
She said you have this Saturday and Sunday, September 26th and 27th, to do it. Burke said there will also be meeting points throughout Southwest Florida, including a beach in Collier County.
"So if someone would like to walk with someone else, or run with someone else, they can," she said.
You'll get a neck gaiter for the run, free 'Bang' energy drinks at pickup points throughout Southwest Florida, and a finisher medal.
Burke said money raised will go toward:
- Materials for victims for coping with the death of a loved one or surviving a serious injury
- Information about the civil or criminal justice system
- Court costs
- Education for new drivers
"There's always opportunities within each challenge, and right now, we're we're going through such a challenging time in our community. The opportunity is to really promote things live and utilize technology," Burke said.
