Homes flooded by Ft. Myers canal

Residents living on a small street between Broadway Avenue and Cleveland Avenue are fed up with flooding.

They say a canal spills over onto Grace Street every time it floods.  Megan Cortez tried using towels to block the water.

“My husband put this here so that the waster wouldn’t fall in anymore, but it still keeps on going in.”

Cortez says it flooded her basement and the room where her mom lives.

“I had to put the electricity out.”

Neighbors say this isn’t the first time this canal has flooded.

“All summer long they didn’t do anything with the canal, not with the grass around it, they mowed it once.  This morning when I took my dog for a walk, it was full already,” said Marie Dabrowski-Shaffchick.

She’s worried about the flooding reaching her backyard.

“Here’s my question, they won’t do anything about it, but if our homes get damaged, whose gonna pay for the costs?  The County?

Cortez called the fire department for help with her flooded home, but was told they couldn’t help.

She’s worried about her kids getting into the standing water.

“The ditch has chemicals and diseases where the kids are walking in it.”

Other neighbors tell me they’ve put several calls into the city of Ft. Myers, but never heard a definitive answer on what will be done about the canal.

4-In-Your-Corner will be reaching out to city officials to get answers.
