PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla – Whether they knew him or not, people in the Southwest Florida community have come together for the family of a charlotte county teenage boy who died a hero.

On Thursday, Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell said in a press conference that investigators believe a 15 year old named Khyler died protecting his little sister during a burglary.

Those who knew the teen best are still trying to wrap their heads around how a teenager who had his whole life ahead of him is now gone. Close family friends have organized a GoFundMe page that has raised more than $20,000 as of Monday. They hope the money will help give him the burial he deserves, as well as help the family get into a new home so they aren't faced with the daily reminder of this traumatic experience.

Fox 4 spoke with the organizers of the GoFundMe page. They said they are planning another fundraiser that will take place Saturday, Oct. 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Harbor Heights Park. Food plates will be served for free, along with raffle items with all proceeds going directly to the family. Anyone in the community is invited to attend, remember Khyler, and support his family during this difficult time.
