LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A family of three were fortunate to have a passenger ferry passing nearby when their boat caught fire Monday.

The Key West Express was making one of its daily trips between Fort Myers Beach and Key West when the crew heard a distress call from a vessel about three miles away.

According to a Facebook post by Jeremy Reed, the captain plotted a course to the burning boat and boat staff helped pull the family of three from the water.

The victims were given dry clothes and transported back to shore.

The boat, however, had to be left behind.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
