Estero approves ban on medical marijuana dispensaries

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- The Village of Estero has voted to ban medical marijuana dispensaries permanently within city limits.

The city council voted in favor of the ban Wednesday.  Some village leaders say dispensaries would not be a good fit, because of the village's small population.

The "Marijuana Policy Group" says Florida should have no more than one dispensary for every 50,000 residents.  Only 31,000 people live in Estero.

Estero Mayor Jim Boesch told Fox 4 earlier this month that two dispensaries will be opening in Ft. Myers.  He doesn't think it will be a problem for people to travel there for treatment.

Voters overwhelmingly approved a constitutional amendment last fall legalizing medicinal marijuana. The law allows municipalities around the state to opt out if they don't want dispensaries in their communities.
