CAPE CORAL, Fla. — The DEA has announced the 20th national Take Back Day.

The DEA says they have seen an increase in opioid overdose deaths during the pandemic.

The event is set for April 24th, at the Cape Coral Police Department on 1100 cultural park Boulevard from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

The increase in drug overdose deaths appeared to begin before the COVID-19 health emergency but accelerated significantly during the first months of the pandemic.

The public can drop off potentially dangerous prescription medications such as tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs at collection sites which will adhere to local COVID-19 guidelines and regulations to maintain the safety of all participants and local law enforcement.

Liquids (including intravenous solutions), syringes and other sharps, and illegal drugs will not be accepted at the site according to the DEA.

Vaping devices and cartridges will be accepted at its drop-off locations provided lithium batteries are removed.
