FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Lee County Deputies have identified the man that was shot and killed in the area of Palm Beach Boulevard and Fairfax Road Saturday night.
Authorities received a call at approximately 9:20 p.m. of a possible shooting in the area.
When they responded to the scene, they found 62-year-old William Alfredo Pohto who was shot and killed.
Deputies said the incident appeared to have stemmed from an argument between Pohto and an unidentified suspect.
A witness said she heard several shots ring out just before the sun went down, before deputies blocked off the area with crime scene tape. Clothing and a shoe were seen on the street where deputies were investigating.
The owner of the Palm Beach Motel told Fox 4 a fight broke out between Pohto and a younger man who was renting out a room at the motel. According to him, Pohto actually left, came back from across the street with a gun and shot the younger man. A blood stain was seen on the ground close to that mans room. That is when the unidentified man reacted, shooting Pohto to death. "It's kind of scary and I was just speechless," said an employee at the convenience store next door. "I was scared to go home."
The Lee County Sheriffs' Office is attempting to determine if Pohto was the aggressor in the incident.
Detectives believe this is an isolated incident and say there is no danger to the community.
This is an active investigation.
