COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- A Collier County Sheriff's deputy was taken to the hospital early Friday morning after a gun accidentally discharged.
It happened in the Quail Roost community off Roost Road in east Naples.
According to the Collier County Sheriff's Office, deputies were called to a home on Covey Lane at 3:17 a.m. for a shots fired report.
Further investigation determined that a firearm had discharged during an altercation, but no injuries were reported.
During the investigation, a homeowner at the scene requested a deputy take possession of an old 22-caliber Colt rifle for destruction.
The deputy reportedly placed the rifle against the patrol vehicle, where it fell to the ground and discharged, sending a round into the deputy's foot.
EMS treated the officer at the scene and took him to the hospital. There is no word on his condition.
The sheriff's office's Professional Responsibility Bureau will conduct an administrative review to ensure that policies and procedures were followed.
