Collier seeks to address gas shortage issue ahead of hurricane season

On the eve of what could be another busy hurricane season, Collier County emergency officials are looking for ways to avoid a repeat of last year's gas shortage.

Fuel was scarce before and after Hurricane Irma struck Southwest Florida.

"We knew where  the gas was, still waiting in line took about an hour and a half two hours," said Todd Baughn of Naples.

Officials are discussing the idea of requiring gas stations, specifically ones away from the interstate to have generators so they can stay open after a storm.

"Pumps are connected to the internet, and if there is absence of internet capability then you lose that point of sale capability," said Collier Emergency Manager Dan Summers.

The county also plans to ask the governor to lift weight restrictions on tankers so they can get here faster with more fuel.

"Not only is there a supply issue, there is a power issue in terms of getting the fuel out of the ground," said Summers.

But Baughn, who is a life long Southwest Florida resident, says the real issue is there just wasn't enough gas on hand at the time of the storm.

"When a disaster like that hits, there's not a whole lot anyone can do, maybe have more in reserve and ready to go."

Officials also say Southwest Florida's fuel supply was crippled because a lot of it is shipped in to the Port of Tampa and Miami, both of which were closed during the storm
