IMMOKALEE, FLA — The CEO of Habitat for Humanity Collier County says there's been unwanted solicitation in some Immokalee neighborhoods.
"They going door to door in habitat communities," said Lisa Lefkow.
According to her, they've seen a rash of out of town insurance claims adjusters in those neighborhoods.
"We've heard reports from homeowners that they are offering all kinds of things, the sun, the moon and the stars. Just sign here and we'll get you a new kitchen and a new roof," said Lefkow.
And some of them, apparently dressed like construction workers, have even gone into homes.
"We've heard different reports of activities once in the home. As they are theoretically checking for leaks under sinks and then things are happening subsequent to the visit that were not happening prior to the visit," said Lefkow.
Lefkow says they convinced a few people to sign contracts, but a good number of them backed out after reading more of the fine print.
She believes these workers are taking advantage of people during the COVID-19 pandemic. And she's warning all homeowners to be wary of any knocks you may get in the coming days or weeks.
If you do get a knock, here's what she recommends:
"First thing is ask a lot of questions. Second, never be pressured to sign anything on the spot," said Lefkow.
