COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- The Collier County Sheriff's Office is investigating a 22-year-old man's death after deputies responded to a suspicious incident in Ave Maria.

According to the sheriff's office, at 7 AM Monday, deputies responded to a report of a suspicious person near the Ave Maria Oratory. Multiple people told deputies they saw 22-year-old Luke Scheck acting erratically nearby. One person said he laid in a roadway. Another person reported that he tried to jump in front of a car. A third witness, and friend of Scheck, told deputies Scheck had been violent and punched him in the face.

Deputies attempted to make contact with Scheck, but he ran away.  Scheck then charged at another deputy, who used pepper spray to control him, but Scheck got away.

He then entered a nearby lake and began to dunk his head in and out of the water. Deputies noticed he appeared distressed. They were able to get him out of the water and onto land, and he was transported to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators are conducting a full death investigation, including a toxicology report.
