CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. — While at the Chevron station on US 41 and Melbourne St., around 8 a.m., a Charlotte County Traffic Unit Corporal was shocked as he watched an SUV veer off the road and crash into a parked truck and utility trailer and a gas pump, which dislodged from its base and smashed into the back of his SUV before catching fire.
Fortunately, the Corporal was not injured and was able to provide assistance to the driver, a 72-year-old woman from Punta Gorda. She was airlifted to Lee Memorial Hospital in serious condition.
No other injuries were reported.
Investigators believe a medical emergency may have caused the crash.
FHP is investigating.
