CAPTIVA, Fla. - Surveillance cameras rolled as thieves struck in a series of golf cart heists on a popular getaway spot in Lee county.
4 In Your Corner obtained surveillance video from the North Captiva Island Club of thieves as they tried to get away with club golf carts.
Lee County Sheriff deputies were able to recover the stolen golf carts. However, there were thousands of dollars worth of damages from the joy rides.
James Lortz from YOLO Watersports in Captiva said they too have experienced people who tried to steal their carts. Thieves try to cash in when you don't lock up your golf carts.
"They're on vacation. You're really not thinking about it a whole lot," Lortz said. "We have to remind them to do ti," he added.
Lortz said EZ-GO carts appeal to thieves because they could be easy to steal.
"The key for the golf cart to run is universal for most golf carts, which make it easy to take," he said.
However, a $10 bike lock could be the answer for both golf cart renters and owners.
"What you do is string the bike lock to the steering wheel and back to the lock," Lortz said. "It keeps the person from steering the golf cart," he added.
The bike lock idea is an extra deterrent he recommends.
