CAPE CORAL, Fla. --- Cape Coral officials announcing this year's Cardboard Boat Regatta is canceled due to bacteria being found in the water.
The Cardboard Boat Regatta, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Cape Coral, was scheduled for April 21 in the Bimini Basin. But Cape Coral officials requested the water be tested before the event took place but found the water wasn't suitable for swimming.
"Even though the Bimini Basin is not a public swimming area, these high levels of fecal bacteria are cause for concern and must be addressed," said Connie Barron, Cape Coral Public Affairs Manager. "We will be determining our best course of action and will identify the next steps to reduce the levels of bacteria in the Basin area."
Cape Coral officials say they believe there's a correlation between the high fecal bacteria counts in the Basin and the number of boats that continue to moor in the Basin.
Event organizers say they will have a booth at bike night to showcase their boats.
