CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- One Cape Coral resident is trying to stop speeders in their SW Cape neighborhood. The resident has posted a "slow down" sign outside their home hoping drivers along Oasis Boulevard will take the sign's advice and reduce their speed.
"It usually doesn't work. The only thing that really seems to be a deterrent would be an officer in a car causing them to slow down, they usually pick up speed coming over the bridge and they usually see the cop car and then they slow down," said resident Elaine Damiano.
A spokesperson with the Cape Coral Police Department tells Fox 4 the department plans to increase officers in the area as the school year approaches. They issued a statement saying, "Our officers are out there to remind drivers that the traffic pattern and volume has changed, that pedestrians, bicyclists and school buses are back in the mix, and that they need to abide by the posted speed limits."
In the meantime, residents said they are using extra caution when out walking with friends and their dogs.
