CAPE CORAL, Fla — Cape Coral City Council voted to make changes to residential parking requirements.

Changes include:

1. Allowing a max of 2 pickups and light vans WITH graphics or lettering in each residential parcel (SUVs and passenger cars with graphics or lettering are already permitted in residential areas). Trucks or vans with ladder racks or utility boxes would still be prohibited in residential areas.

2. Prohibiting parking commercial vehicles in multi-family zoning districts (no semis across the street from single-family homes and duplexes could not be rented for the purpose of parking commercial vehicles).

3. Prohibiting parking on the grass on private property in all residential zoning districts

The change is not a welcoming idea for some residents.

“I should be able to park in my grass whether my neighbors like it or not, they don’t own the property that I pay for, ” said Kyle Shriver.

Council members urging community members to utilize alternatives.

“We’re not telling them they can’t park it there at all, we’re just telling them they have to park it in the driveway, ” said Council member John Gunter.

City code enforcement will give citations only to habitual offenders.

“That doesn’t mean when you can’t have family over, or parties or Christmas dinner, its someone who routinely parks on the grass.”

This new ordinance takes effect immediately.

Regulations for boat, trailer, and RV parking have not changed.
