CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The Cape Coral Police Department is receiving over $123,000 as part of the Department of Justice's School Violence Prevention Program grant.
The department is one of only three law enforcement agencies in the nation to have been awarded the grant, and the only one in Florida.
This comes after the horrific shooting at Marjorie Stoneman Douglas High School impacted schools and law enforcement across the state.
The Lee County School District and Cape Police created a 25-person SRO unit in around 60 days.
Their goal is to become one of, if not the only, SRO units in the country in which all members are certified threat managers.
