CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A Cape Coral man was seriously injured Wednesday morning after being pinned between his own vehicle and his garage. The accident happened around 6:30 a.m. on Southwest 25th Court.
"A taxi cab driver called Cape Coral Police and advised that there was a traffic crash within the residence, where a vehicle which had no occupants had crushed a man," said Sergeant Allan Kolak of the Cape Coral Police Department.
According to a police report, Glenn Wickes, 74, was found pinned between the door of his Lexus SUV and the pillar next to his garage door. The SUV had somehow been left in reverse while Wickes was at least partially outside the vehicle, and the driver's side door was open.
Wickes did not have a pulse when police got to the scene. They began life-saving measures, and Wickes did have a pulse by the time EMTs arrived. Wickes was then taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
"Once he's able to speak, investigators would be able to find out the actual circumstances that led up to the crash," Kolak said.
Neighbor Rena Zellman said the accident is a scary reminder to always be aware of one's surroundings in a vehicle.
"How many times are we distracted or in a hurry?" Zellman said Thursday. "That could easily happen to you, and it makes you think, 'wow, that could have been me, or someone I loved.'"
The police report states that there is home security of the crash, which they hope will help them piece together exactly how it happened.
