CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A husband and wife finally returned home after they spent weeks stranded in Puerto Rico because of Hurricane Maria. The couple spent most of their trip on the phone with American Airlines trying to get a flight off the island.
"There were times when I thought I might as well just live here," said Sarah Rivera, a day after she got back to Cape Coral. "We are not getting off this island," she added.
Sarah and her husband, John, had to endure seven flight cancellations. However, some of their family in Florida was able to find their ticket away from Puerto Rico.
"My mother found on Facebook about a link for Royal Caribbean," said Rivera, "So we went there and got on the boat," she added.
Thousands of people waited in lines to board the ship. But, after two weeks away from home, the Riveras would need more patience.
"We were standing in line from 5:30 in the morning until about 1 in the afternoon when we finally got on the boat," she added.
The couple was relieved when they boarded the ship back to Florida. They said they would return to Puerto Rico one day, but they're happy this experience can finally be logged into their memories.
"It's a vacation we will never forget," said John Rivera.
