CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- The Cape Coral city manager will no longer have the power to set speed limits.

Monday night, council members voted to take that power for themselves.

In the past, the city manager was the only person with authority to set or change speed limits. Now, council members will do it.

“There have been incidents where that study actually came back it was warranted to raise the speed limit, so giving council the authority to make that decision we can avoid those situations from happening,” said Mayor Joe Coviello.

Just last month, the Cape Coral City Council voted to cap the speed in residential areas to 30 miles per hour, even if a traffic study recommends otherwise.
