LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- The U.S. Coast Guard rescued a boat captain who was experiencing medical issues dozens of miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico recently.

According to the Coast Guard, a call came in from a 30-foot vessel that was 48 miles off Sanibel, requesting medical assistance.

The 53-year-old captain was experiencing heart issues related to recent heart surgery.

A Jayhawk helicopter crew, who were already airborne on a training mission, responded to the vessel, where FWC assisted in the getting the captain airlifted into the helicopter.

They transported the man to Tampa General for treatment.

The boat's crew safely navigated the vessel back to port.
