BONITA SPRINGS, Fla. — Florida Highway Patrol said an SUV cut off a pick-up truck on Bonita Beach Road, then crashed into a fence and killed 65-year-old bicyclist Robert Miniger Monday afternoon.

Troopers said an SUV headed eastbound on Bonita Beach Road toward Imperial Shores Boulevard switched lanes and cut off the pick-up truck to the right of it. They said that’s when it hit the pick up truck and spun out into the curb, hitting Miniger, who was riding on the sidewalk, and a tree nearby.

David Stead lives nearby and said he rides his bike in the area. He said he avoids riding on this side of the road altogether. “It’s a dangerous road. Traffic is going more than 40 miles an hour here. I usually go on the other side of the street where the sidewalk is wider,” he said.

Miniger was pronounced dead at the scene.
