PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- A section of Bermont Road in rural Charlotte County has been closed for over 24 hours after a fatal crash involving three trucks damaged the road Tuesday morning.

The crash happened around 4 a.m. Tuesday on Bermont Road east of State Road 31.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, the driver of an eastbound tractor-trailer attempted to pass another truck in foggy conditions on the 2-lane road, and crashed head-on with a westbound truck.

The driver of the westbound truck, 62-year-old Eddy Casado of Hialeah, was thrown from his truck, which broke open and spilled its cargo of soda all over the road.  Casado died at the scene.

The driver of the truck that was attempting the pass, 44-year-old Sthenio Syvrain of Lehigh Acres, was critically injured in the crash and taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.

The truck that was being passed was forced into a ditch and overturned.  Its driver was uninjured.

The roadway was heavily damaged at the scene and as of Wednesday morning was still closed to traffic while emergency repairs are being made.

The crash is still under investigation.
