Barbecue competition draws teams from across Florida

FORT MYERS, Fla. — For five years, the Smoke on the Water Barbecue Competition and Music Festival has drawn teams from across Florida to compete for a chance to go to the Jack Daniels Invitational in Tennessee. Proceeds help fund programs at the Sidney Davis Art Center in Downtown Fort Myers. 

Four in Your Corner was there, the morning of the first day of the competition, as vendors and competitors prepared samples for a judges event Friday evening. Just as interesting as the barbecuing techniques, are the names of the teams. One Pork-Chicka-Cow-Cow, whose competed at Smoke on he Water for some time. 

One team in particular, Big Papa's Country Kitchen, has a specific strategy in mind for how they plan to win. The team, headed by Dan Higgins uses a secret sauce recipe. It's served them well. Big Papa's Country Kitchen has won 43 barbecue competitions and been to the invite only Jack Daniels competition twice in the past. 

The event also features musical performances by acts specifically chosen by The Sidney Davis Arts Center. Special emphasis was put on local acts who highlight the best of what Southwest Florida has to offer 

Smoke on the Water is taking place April 27th from 6pm to 10pm and on April 28th from 11am to 10pm.
