PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. --- Local bank collects over thousands of shoes for underprivileged children in Port Charlotte.

The Charlotte State Bank & Trust were among numerous area businesses, community organizations and churches serving as drop-off locations for shoes.

The bank accepted shoes and monetary donations to purchase shows. Additional funds were collected through its "Casual for a Cause" program, in which bank employees make donations for the privilege of wearing jeans and sneakers on specified Fridays.

"We will continue to collect donations throughout the year to fulfill the need of properly fitted footwear for disadvantaged children in Charlotte County," said Kiwanis project coordinator Christy Smith, founder, and chairperson of Shoes for Kids.

Monetary donations may be mailed to the Sunrise Kiwanis of Port Charlotte, 1489 Market Circle, unit 308, Port Charlotte, Fl.

Shoes for Kids delivered a total of 5,096 pairs of new sneakers so far this year.
