Arrest made in fatal September crash into Cape Coral pool

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police have arrested the driver of an SUV that was driving triple the speed limit before being launched onto the roof of a home and into the pool in September, killing one passenger.

19-year-old Gavin Clutts is charged with Vehicular Homicide, 3-counts No Driver’s License Causing Death /Serious Bodily Injuries, 2-counts Reckless Driving Causing Serious Bodily Injury, and Reckless Driving Causing Property Damage.

According to Cape Coral Police, investigators determined that Clutts was driving at 135 miles per hour on Wilmington Parkway just after midnight on September 29th, 2018 when the vehicle wen through a stop sign, crossed an empty lot and hit a boat on a trailer.

The collision launched the SUV into the air and onto the roof of a home, before rolling off the roof and into the pool.

One passenger in the pool managed to escape the SUV after landed in the water, but three other occupants were trapped inside and removed by emergency personnel.

One of the passengers, 20-year-old Michael Velez, later died at the hospital.

Following an extensive investigation, Clutts was arrested Friday morning and booked into the Lee County Jail. His bond has not been set.
