PUNTA GORDA, Fla. -- Police are investigating an armed convenience store robbery on Tamiami Drive in Punta Gorda Wednesday morning.

According to Punta Gorda Police, it happened around 6 a.m. at the Circle K store on Tamiami Trail at Aqui Esta Drive.

Police do not believe there is any further threat to public safety, but they urge citizens to avoid the area if possible while the investigation is underway.

The suspect in this case is a black male in his 20's, wearing a gray hoodie sweatshirt with lettering (possibly New York related lettering), black Puma sweatpants, and gloves. It is believed that he may be driving a small, dark in color SUV style vehicle (possibly a Chrysler).

Detectives from the Punta Gorda Police Department and the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office are working together on the investigation.
