LEE COUNTY, Fla — A fatal accident Monday morning along Corkscrew road is drawing attention to dangerous conditions on the road.
Corkscrew spans from Tamiami Trail in Lee County to State Road 82 in Collier County.
But the eastern stretch winds through a rural area, with no lighting.
"Oh yea, its dangerous. No lights,” said Javen Velasco.
Corkscrew is a convenient cut through for people trying to get to and from Estero to Lehigh Acres or Immokalee.
"The traffic around here is about 85 miles an hour,” said Lee Jarvis.
Lee County Spokesperson Tim Engstrom says the county commission approved a widening project on February 19th, that will expand Corkscrew from 2 to 4 lanes between Ben Hill Griffin and the Alico Road intersection.
Funding for the first phase of the project is approved for next year.
"4 lane road would be better, it would allow people to get from point A to point B faster,” said Velasco.
The cause accident near Six L Farms Road and Corkscrew is still being investigated by the Florida Highway Patrol.
