FORT MYERS, Fla. -- A new report from the U.S. Department of Labor says for the first time, the number of job openings has equaled out to the number of Americans seeking employment.
An update was published on Tuesday, showing there were 6.6 Million job openings for the approximately 6.6 million people who are looking for jobs in the country. At the Florida Gulf Coast University, career advisor Jackie Kulls said it is a unique situation that benefits graduating students. "It's a fantastic opportunity for students who are looking for a full time opportunity after college, since the market is wide open," she said.
Along with this, several companies with headquarters in Southwest Florida are growing. "We have a lot of employers that are growing. Gartner, Hertz, Enterprise, they're all constantly looking for candidates," Kulls said.
According to Kulls, the logistics industry, engineering, and health and human services industries are also sustainable industries in our area.
Student Andrea Butler, who is studying to be a nurse, said the new Labor Department statistics are encouraging. "It helps students, or it helps me at least, stay motivated for the future to know that I will have a position or a few opportunities open for me and I can kind of pick and choose what I like," she said.
