A 13-year-old was arrested after being caught with marijuana and a loaded gun with five rounds on Gateway Charter School property Wednesday, according to Lee County Sheriff's office.
A student told Fox 4 they had an emergency fire drill Wednesday that they thought was just a drill, but they learned later that it was because of that incident.
It all escalated after an administrator witnessed the student in the back of the classroom with a strong odor of marijuana.
After taking possession of his backpack, administrators discovered a burnt marijuana cigarette and a loaded firearm.
Deputies took him into custody, according to the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
A parent we spoke to is using this incident as a learning situation for his kids. Oswaldo Russian goes through scenarios, including shootings, and teaches them how to react.
The principal sent this statement to the parents, "We had an unfortunate incident occur at school today that you should be made aware of. Toward the end of the school day, marijuana and a weapon were were discovered and confiscated. I am very proud of our staff for their very quick and precise reactions and although this is troubling, no danger was ever present to our students."
