Florida voters have spoken, giving overwhelming approval of medical marijuana. Amendment 2 passed with 71% of Floridians voting yes, which will expand the use for people with serious illnesses and certain chronic diseases. Now that this constitutional amendment has passed, some people are wondering if and how the biggest county in Southwest Florida will put limits on it.
Even though the statewide amendment passed, medical marijuana patients in Charlotte County will have to wait for access to the drug. Commissioners passed a measure temporarily banning marijuana dispensaries for nine months to give them enough time to establish certain regulations.
Four In Your Corner sat down with Commissioner Hamman to ask if he anticipates any additional measures in Lee County.
"Right now we're in a wait and see mode," he said. "We're kind of waiting to see what rules the state legislature will give us to play by."
Hamman tells Four In Your Corner he anticipates there may be conflict since medical marijuana will be distributed at dispensaries.
"I think there may be potential for neighborhood conflicts as they try to locate these facilities. Some neighborhoods while they may have been in favor of amendment 2 may not want the facility in their neighborhood."
