FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla-- The Fort Myers Beach Town Council is currently looking at ways to improve pedestrians safety. A national"Dangerous by Design"report published earlier this year raised concerns about safety along Fort Myers Beach and in response the Lee County Metropolitan Planning Organization now lists this as a top priority for 2017.
"You have to be careful of pedestrians and traffic. You can't ever take it for granted that you can cross," said seasonal resident Sue Barton.
Barton is like other residents in the area worried about the safety of those who walk or ride bikes along the sidewalks in the area.
"It would be better if the bikes aren't on the sidewalks, that way they aren't running back and forth with the pedestrians trying to walk around and everything," said resident Ryan Duffy.
Duffy believes a bike lane is a great solution to the problem. As an avid bicyclist and runner he said he's seen close calls between pedestrians and motorists in the past.
Last week, the Ft. Myers Beach Town Council created a map on its website to get feedback. People pointed out trouble spots along Fort Myers Beach.
"People think the cars are going to stop and they haven't stopped and we saw an accident the other day," said Barton.
