Florida parents push for recess

Posted

FORT MYERS, FLA.- Passionate parents across the state are fighting to bring recess back to the regular school day, with petitions popping up statewide to require recess, even a bill introduced in the legislature.

In Southwest Florida, parents won the fight more than a year ago. Elementary-aged students -- kindergarten through 5th grade -- get a 15 minute recess daily.

A Lee County School District spokeswoman said the district can't comment on what's happening statewide, but sent Fox 4 this statement:  "In addition to the regular PE /health statutory requirements for students , elementary students have an additional 15 minutes of unstructured recess time each day in Lee County."

According to Lee County parents, some schools are rumored to cut those breaks short. Parent Lori Fayhee told Fox 4 it's important to give kids a recess during the school day.  "It helps them study more, it helps them learn faster and it helps them develop socially."

She said she supports the bill that would require recess introduced in the Florida senate.
