Family's search for beloved pet shells out a surprise

Posted

A 100-pound pet tortoise vanished from a Port Charlotte backyard.

"A little confused and just scared that he was gone," said fifteen year old Kate Chalone.

The Chalone family immediately posted fliers around the neighborhood, but they didn't stop there. They turned to Facebook for help.

"I was amazed on how many people actually took the time to share the post on Facebook and actually went out and looked for him," said Tasha Chalone.

The social media attention paid off this morning.

"We get a call from an Englewood vet that a black truck brings in a giant tortoise," said Chalone.

Tasha's husband brought back a tortoise, but not Sheldon.

"It would be a million in one, you don't see a one hundred pound tortoise walking around everyday," said Tasha.

Since the new tortoise arrived, he has had trouble coming out of his shell. The family noticed differences in behavior.

"Sheldon would always come when we came to the door because he knew we had food. This one doesn't seem to be coming," she said.

But they aren't going to be cold blooded towards this mystery tortoise.

"I will rescue, foster it if I had too but if it belongs to somebody else, I want to find it's home," said Tasha.

Tasha says she feels her Sheldon is out there.

"If my tortoise is still missing I don't want to not find him," she said.
