CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- A burnt pan was the only damage to a Cape Coral house thanks to a quick thinking exterminator.
Samuel Shapiro went to physical therapy and while away from his home, his exterminator showed up to the house with a burning smell and a beeping fire alarm.
"The gentleman from Hulett went into the house and did what he had to do. He called 9-11, turned it off, put it into the water. He saved a lot of trouble" said Shapiro.
Usually exterminators protect homes from household pests rather than pieces of frozen chicken.
"The police said with the home having the shutters on there, the home being closed up that way, it would've went up really quickly," said exterminator Kirk Hickman.
It would've been devastating to Shapiro if he lost these precious pictures of his thirteen grandchildren.
"I just did what anyone should normally do. I wouldn't consider it anything about a hero. I just tried helping out somebody who could've lost a home," said Hickman.
Samuel sure thinks he was.
"He's a hero. The people who don't want to be called heroes are heroes," said Shapiro.
The Shapiro family knows how they want to say thank you.
"I would open a bottle of good whiskey and we would finish that whole bottle and at the end of that we'd light up some cigars and have a really good time," said Samuel.
