COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- Fox 4 is uncovering new details about a heartbreaking case in East Naples with many unanswered questions.
The Department of Children and Families now says there was one previous child protective investigation that was still open at the time when 2-month-old Abigail Benavides died at Naples Community Hospital. And now the department has opened a death investigation.
Collier County deputies say that on Tuesday, the baby's mother, Krystal Williams was taking a nap with the baby when she woke up to find the infant unconscious. She quickly rushed to the hospital but ran out of gas at a Tamiami Trail 7-Eleven.
Williams then called 911, but sadly Baby Abigail died at the hospital.
The cause of death is still unknown at this time.
