NAPLES, Fla. — The reopening of beaches in Collier County left many excited, and ready to enjoy the beautiful water, but after yesterday's beach turn out Naples City Manager Charles Chapman made a quick decision close to the beaches of Naples yet again. Collier County Commissioner Penny Taylor says, it’s the right move to make.
“Going forward I support them opening, but in a way that protects us, from areas that have high infections. You can’t blame the people for coming over, but it’s not what we need to do right now, we need to practice social distancing”, said Penny Taylor Collier County Commissioner District 4.
She described yesterday’s beach turn out as a wake-up call.
“Maybe the one size fits all and just open the doors and everything is okay, maybe that’s not what Collier County should do” said Taylor.
Understanding the frustration and concern Taylor says, all of Collier County has to come together on this matter.
“It’s not trial and error but sometimes we make mistakes, but that’s okay because we’re working together, that’s the key we’re working together” said Taylor.
One man walking in the area told us, he is not surprised.
“ I believe we have to do something, we’re on a right path but I think we need to continue to slow down” said Jay Over.
However, one woman says she’s in disbelief
“I’m just stunned, because we need to be in the fresh air. The mask you breathe is CO2, you’re actually harming your body instead of getting fresh air, so if you can get out on the beach and exercise and for your mental health as well, and you know it’s a safe environment, its a place people can go and destress,” said Diane Kelly.
Commissioner Taylor tells us to stay tuned because Monday at 1 P.M. the City of Naples will be meeting to discuss beach closures, and Tuesday Collier County Commissioners will be meeting as well hoping to work closely with not only the City of Naples but Marco Island.
