CAPE CORAL, Fla -- After images of thousands risking their health to get a paper unemployment application in South Florida surfaced, the Department of Economic Opportunity has launched a new website to help the process run more smoothly.

The announcement comes as the government is set to report another shocking level of unemployment claims Thursday.

The report could hit 7 million or higher. That's on top of the 10 million Americans we already know have filed for unemployment in recent weeks, as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Filing has been a nightmare for many Floridians, who’ve experienced everything from long call wait times to error messages on the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity site.

But now, the hope is that a newly launched site will speed up the process. Floridians who do not have a current claim open can apply here.
