FORT MYERS, Fla. — Health experts say April is Move More Month. An initiative to stay moving toward healthy goals.

Dr. Mayrene Hernandez with UnitedHealthCare says even people stuck at home can achieve 10,000 steps a day.

You can include your family on walks outside, or fun games inside to stay active.

She says research studies show a list of important health benefits, like a boost to your immune system.

“A Harvard study has shown that even if you do end up with a cold and flu, it decreases the intensity and duration. I think that’s an important take away to being active. It’s important. Stay at home, but don’t just sit at home," said Dr. Hernandez.

She also says it's important to track your steps while at home.

You can use available online resources to start outside, like UnitedHealthCare walking maps.

Walking everyday can be done gradually to help people stay healthy, lose weight, and decrease the risk of depression.

Signing up for employer wellness programs can also keep you motivated.

With COVID-19 keeping most people inside, Dr. Hernandez says now is the perfect time to set healthy goals and start achieving them.
