FORT MYERS, Fla. — With peak flu season in the middle of COVID-19, people are looking out for two contagious viruses circulating Southwest Florida.

"I think with a lot of people staying indoors, social distancing, wearing masks, and washing their hands, it's going to drive the flu numbers down," said T.J. DePaola, Pharmacist in Charge.

In this morning's segment, Cypress Pharmacy in Fort Myers talks about the current numbers they're seeing with the flu and the vaccine this year.

“Does the flu shot cover every strain of flu? It does not. What they do is they base it on previous data on what’s most likely to be the flu strain that year. Still, if you can protect yourself as much as you can, that’s the ideal situation," said DePaola.

He explains the similarities between Influenza and the coronavirus, and what that could mean for people exposed to both viruses.

The pharmacy says the safest way to get through the season is by practicing the same methods of prevention, such as keeping a social distance and wearing a face mask.
