Just in time for the holidays, a free adoption clinic at Collier Domestic Animal Services held an "Adopt-a-thon" over the weekend.

It was a 33-hour event where people could adopt a dog or cat, free of charge, shots and paperwork included.

"My son goes 'Mommy, I want a dog.'  And I'm like 'we'll see.'  So we're gonna say Santa brought it early," said Amber Orlando, who drove to Naples from Ft. Myers to adopt a dog.

Lots of dogs were adopted out, but plenty of cats remain.

"We are an open admission animal shelter, we take in any animal that comes through our door," said Director Darcy Andrade.

Andrade says DAS also receives animals from owners who can no longer care for them.  "We could adopt out 50 this weekend, and next week we will take in over 100," said Andrade.

Division of Animal Services is open Monday through Saturday from 9:00 am to 6:00 pm.
