Collier Commission to look at new sports complex without Braves

Collier County Commissioners will meet Tuesday to decide if they should move ahead with a new sports and recreation complex.

Last year the county nixed a deal with the Atlanta Braves that would have brought spring training games to a multi-purpose complex.

But the county wants to look at some land near I-75 and Collier Boulevard that could serve as a large recreation area.  Draft plans include several baseball, softball and football fields.

Proponents say the facility would attract large tournaments that have bypassed Collier County in the past.

"There is a deficiency with our ability to host large venues of this type," said Commissioner Bill McDaniel.

Estimated price tag for the facility is $60 million, cheaper than the original cost of hosting the Braves.  Commissioners will also look at how the project will be paid for.

The Braves have set their sights on Sarasota County for future spring training games.
