Collier Commission considers regulations for medicinal marijuana

The decision made by the county could affect where and when a dispensary can operate in your community.

"If they are gonna dispense medical marijuana, do it in a positive way," said Carol Shannon of Naples, when asked about marijuana dispensaries.

Collier County Commissioners faced those questions Tuesday as they asked staff to craft an ordinance which would put a 12 month moratorium on dispensaries until some ground rules are set.

"It's a new issue, the staff is asking for some time to figure out where we would put that in the land development code," said Commissioner Andy Solis.

Commissioners are also waiting on some guidance from the state, which has until July to set regulations around medical marijuana facilities.

Shannon is hoping commissioners place some sort of buffer between dispensaries and schools, so kids don't get the wrong idea.

"They may try and get it  themselves, and what if these people drop some on the ground or something and it's near a school," said Shannon.

The commission will hold public comment on the proposed moratorium.  If it does pass, it can be repealed once state regulations over medical marijuana go into effect.
