LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A recent uptick in car theft and burglaries has prompted law enforcement to remind owners about the importance of keeping your car doors locked.
According to Southwest Florida Crime Stoppers, over the last few weeks, detectives have noticed an uptick in the number of car thefts in Southwest Florida. In most all instances, not only were the cars left unlocked, but the keys were still inside.
“It takes only a moment to stop, remove the keys and lock the door,” said Trish Routte, Crime Stoppers Coordinator. “That one simple step will deter criminals from either breaking into, or taking your car altogether. Leaving the keys inside the car is a grand invitation to criminals to commit a theft – and that’s what we don’t want to see happen to any more victims. This is, by far, one of the most easily preventable crimes.”
In addition, drivers are reminded to always keep their valuables (i.e. laptop computers, electronics, purses and wallets) out of plain view. Even when a car is locked, the lure of cash or easily pawned electronics sitting on a passenger seat could be motivation enough for criminals to smash through a window. Thus, the best rule of thumb is to always secure items in the trunk, or ideally, bring them inside.
Anyone with information on suspicious activity or the persons involved in the recent rash of auto thefts is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS (8477). All callers will remain anonymous and will be eligible for a cash reward of up to $1,000.
