The Cape Coral Police Department Thursday released crime statistics for the first half of 2016, and their numbers show a decrease in both violent and property crimes.

According to the statistics certified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, violent crimes were down 9.6 percent and property crimes were down 2.8 percent.

While violent crime is down for the first part of 2016, there have been four homicides this year compared to zero at this point last year.

Last month, Cape Coral had one of the deadliest days in recent memory as Christopher Moran shot two people to death, before police finally shot and killed him on June 5th.

In response to the crime statistics released for the first half of 2016, Interim Police Chief Dave Newlan said, "The Cape Coral Police Department's mission to ensure the safety and well-being of our community through a partnership with our citizens.  Thank you to our citizens for your support and cooperation to help us reduce crime in our city."
