A Cape Coral man is running for president. Thomas Menier has just about everything you are looking for in a presidential candidate. He's a veteran, has a loving wife and even an adorable dog, but he still needs to get his name on the ballot.
When you think of presidential candidates, you may think of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton, and Bernie Sanders.
"We are in this campaign to win," said Sanders. But he's not the only one who's in it to win it.
Thomas Menier is running to be your next president right from Cape Coral. He thinks you should hold off on casting your ballot. "I would say you need to reconsider and talk to me before you do that. Because all of the things people want that Trump is spouting out is not going to happen," said Menier.
He says he was turned away from both major parties when he tried throwing his name in the hat for the presidency because he didn't have the cash for a national campaign. But that's not stopping him.
"I said I'll still run on my own as an independent and still can win," said Menier.
He also had to convince someone very near and dear to him. His wife, Connie, needed a little convincing at first. "He told me is going to run for president and I said, 'Oh no, you can't do that.' and he said, 'please can you say yes for this," said Connie Menier.
She eventually came around. Menier is hoping the American people come around too; especially if the other candidates have you feeling hopeless.
"There is hope! there's me, I have hope!"
But to have a shot at the general election, he needs more than just his decked out Chevy Tahoe and a website. He needs tens of thousands of people to petition to get his name on the ballot.
"They'll be voting for me. All I have to do is get on the ballot," said Menier. "Once I'm on the ballot, the rest is easy. Just get out and vote."
