A Cape Coral man is behind bars facing several charges of possessing child pornography and obscene communication.
Arrest records show Shane Mathern,31, was arrested Tuesday morning at his Cape Coral home off SE 24th Ave.
The FBI and Cape Coral Police were involved with the search and arrest. Lt. Dana Coston says the department cannot elaborate on the arrest at this time. He says that in general possession of child pornography cases are very common.
"Sadly, it's more common than people think," Lt. Coston said. "A lot of times it doesn't necessarily involve someone who is local in the area. It's someone willing to travel to the area in order to commit an offense."
Neighbors describe Mathern as a quiet individual who kept to himself. Alexandria Barhardt says she has lived next to Mathern for a few months.
"You never know who you’re living next to and I would never have guessed," Barhardt said. "Just because he does have a son."
Barhardt has two children and says Mathern has a younger son who is with Mathern every other weekend. She says she never observed any unusual behavior.
"His son is like less than 10 so you just never know," she said. "It's just sick. He's a sick person. He needs help."
Four In Your Corner has confirmed The Department of Children and Families is currently not involved with the family and there has not been prior involvement.
