BABCOCK RANCH, Fla. — One teenager is dead and another is hospitalized after a crash on Wednesday morning.

Charlotte County EMS & Fire confirm it was a single-vehicle crash that happened around 6:10 a.m. at Saw Palmetto Pass and Live Oak Parkway.

Two teenagers were involved in the crash when troopers say the driver lost control of the sports utility vehicle and hit several palm trees and overturned.

Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) says the 16-year-old passenger from Punta Gorda died in the crash.

The 16-year-old has been identified as Dane Zigard.

The 16-year-old driver was hurt and taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Both teens are students at the Babcock Neighborhood School.

The Executive Director of Babcock Schools, says there will be a vigil held on Wednesday in the schoolyard at 8 p.m. for the teenager killed and the one that is still recovering.

The Executive Director of the school says they have extra support today at the school for students and plan to send a letter to parents about the crash.

Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
